Cake and champagne - an easy and stylish surprise party

Is there anything better than a surprise party?

(Actually, a small proportion of people hate being blindsided by a surprise party, but they are a tiny minority.)

We recently threw a micro-party for my in-laws (husband’s parents), who live nearby.  It was their 44th wedding anniversary.  I baked a cake, iced it with a fancy pattern, and bought some bubbly.  When it was all laid out in our kitchen, alongside a couple of wrapped gifts, it looked very festive indeed.  We then casually invited the in-laws over for an afternoon drink…and they were thrilled to instead see the ‘cake and champagne’ party all set up in their honour.

This is the easiest little party to throw, and the surprise element adds pizzazz to the occasion.  The cake was easy enough to bake and ice (although that fiddly icing did take me longer than expected!), but I could have ordered it through a baker if I didn’t have the time or expertise.
